Monday, June 30, 2014, Oxford, England

Regretfully, we do not have all of our Oxford pictures....the computer problem.  If you think we are posting a lot of pictures, just lettin' you know that we delete 30% before we publish.....and there were lots in Oxford.  Anyhow, everyone knows the University of Oxford.  There is no known date of origin, but evidence dates back to 1096 AD.  Its current enrolment numbers 22,000 divided into 38-40 different colleges.  The term "college" may be misleading to Americans....it is actually the students' home while they are at Oxford....where they study, live and eat.

The Sheldonian Theatre is the official ceremonial hall of Oxford University.  It is the place where students begin and end their studies at Oxford by matriculating on the first day and graduating on the last....The building is also used for Congregation, the University's parliament and occasionally for concerts and other events.  It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built 1664-1668.  It stands in the centre of the town.....Oxford University doesn't have a "campus" as we know it.  The whole town is part of the campus with the 40ish colleges spread all over and no identifying nameplates!!!

This is the beginning of "Addison's Walk", located on the lovely grounds of Magdalen College.  Our pictures of the buildings are gone, but these few of the gardens and walkway remain.  Magdalen College was founded in 1458 and was the first to be built outside the City's boundaries.

Nine Nobel prize winners were members of Magdalen College....as well as C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Oscar Wilde.

Christ Church is perhaps the most famous of Oxford's colleges because of its unique joint foundation of College and Cathedral.  It is one of the largest with approximately 430 undergraduates and 200 post-graduates.  Among its illustrious members:  several Prime Ministers, John Wesley, several bishops, Albert Einstein, William Penn, author Lewis Carroll whose famous "Alice in Wonderland" is very much a part of Oxford's festivals.....and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War veteran and delegate to the Constitutional Convention from SOUTH CAROLINA!

One of the most impressive areas of Christ Church College is the dining hall....a mammoth room, approximately 30'X50' with long rectangular tables and a ceiling height of 30'.  Our picture is gone!

We were lucky to be in the Cathedral as a visiting choir was rehearsing the Evensong.

On to a local pub to hopefully watch Wimbledon.....but the whole world wants to watch the World Cup.....even in England where Wimbledon LIVES!!

So we stay and cheer and eat....

And then return to our room to watch what we wanna watch!!
