Renwick-Blenheim to Wellington, Wednesday, March 12, 2013

One final good bye pat for Texas!

A stop for gas and here is this sign....so what do YOU think "peckish" means?  clue:  it is NOT hungry!  It means irritable, skittish, unsettled, etc

We have seen the little red cars, the bicycles...and now the motorbike mail lady!

A view from one of the most, if not THE most, famous drives in NZ - the Queen Charlotte Drive - which stretches from Picton to Havelock, approximately 25 miles.  Stunning scenery...except that you cannot enjoy it because of the torturous drive!

Another photo for you beer/Irish/drinking consultants!!!

This is Picton, northernmost city of the South Island, where the ferry arrives.  Following are a few snapshots of the wharf area of Picton...

Damn duck shows up everywhere in the world!

Are we in South Carolina or NZ???

The smokestack of the Interislander ferry

Just four of the many trucks which are being carried with us!

Front page of the local paper....forgot to mention this.  The country is in the midst of the worst drought since 1919!!!  The tourists and the vineyards love it, but the dairy farmers and cattle and sheep farms have not much to feed their herds.  There is a ban on outside watering....the grapes are being harvested this week and next few weeks....bad weather is on the way....they all say that it will be one of the best harvests ever....and we know how the weather has been FABULOUS for us the entire time....just hope the livestock get enough to eat.

Our first sightings of Wellington from the ferry.....this is the capital of NZ....and much larger than we had anticipated.

Two mega-ships in port....glad they are leaving as we arrive.  We were sorry to leave the south island.  It is a beautiful and wondrous place.  But Our Travels continue.
