Today was the day that we plan to see the town of Killarney. Actually Fodor says "In Killarney, it is about the lakes not the town." We would somewhat beg to differ with Mr. Fodor. Our first step, mostly by accident, was to find the Cathedral.
A huge, beautiful church. As cathedrals go, St. Mary's is a young church. The foundation stone was laid in 1842.
All construction was stopped during the Great Potato Famine ('45-'49). And the unfinished building was consecrated in 1855 and completed and blessed in 1914.
Fancy door knobs!!
Takes your breath away! Stunning and deeply reverential.
Take the time to read...this was printed on a large poster in the Cathedral and in each brochure.
"Doubting Thomas" took a liking to this gentleman, St. Brendan, the patron saint of mariners, divers, and sailors.
A procession of the faithful walks down Killarney's Main Street on this Wednesday afternoon, led by HMMG, praying the rosary.
'Tis the police
The kegs are stacked in the alleys in Killarney, rather in front of the pubs!
O'Connor's is one of the favorites in Killarney
I leave Tom here for a wee bit while I go shopping. He captures a classic picture of the ole guys at the bar! This is about 3 pm
Then I join T for a bit...the outside seating is in what looks like an alley, but has a street name. Very fun people watching,
This is the top ranked restaurants in Killarney. The chefs/owners are brother, one of which was the All-Ireland champion football player for several years during the 90's.
Not as many awards as The Wild Geese, but impressive nonetheless.
We both agreed that this not THE worst meal, but close to it....bland, tasteless, boring....just not good. Something has happened in the last year or two....too bad. The fried cheese salad, fish cakes and salmon....nothing remarkable to note. It all looks good, but wasn't. Thanks for reading!
