Sunday, July 6, 2014, Edinburgh, Scotland

We did not manage to stay up through the World Cup match overtime and penalty kicks.  But we learned this morning from Hans that Holland had prevailed in the penalty kicks.  We had another great English breakfast with an Irish flavour (Malcolm is from Ulster), pack, load and say goodbye to Malcolm and Jenny.

And travel a short distance to the Roman Army Museum.

The Brits are proud of their Roman heritage.

The Roman army was made up of the regular, citizen army and the auxiliaries.  The auxiliaries were "recruited" from men in conquered lands.  The recruits were taken far from their homelands to lessen desertion or mutiny.

As with most military, you can tell the different ranks by their uniform and armour.

If an auxiliary soldier served for 25 years, he was automatically awarded Roman citizenship, a coveted award.  Of course, the odds of his surviving to that 25th year were not in his favour!

As we learned yesterday.

The Romans were into education, teaching the conquered and auxiliaries the Roman language and numbers.

They hired teachers.

The museum was well done even with a class room and teacher.  We learned to count....many English words that were derived from Latin....we had to pronounce after the teacher again and again....and actually learned some simple sentences and arithmetic in that short time!!!  Very well done indeed.  Thanks to our tablemate, Katarina, for recommending this stop.

Back on the road again headed north into Scotland.

The terrain changes to more rolling hills.

And tree lined roads.

We stop in Jedburgh for a pit stop and lunch.  The town square.

Kathy is fascinated with different signs.

There is a place in town where Mary Queen of Scots once stayed for a month.

Kathy is also fascinated with the flowers.

and the food -- starting to interest Tom.

More big old churches.

The Abbey was founded in 1138 and was a frequent target for invading border armies.

An old folks home nearby?

We make it to Edinburgh and our new home for the next few days.  We are on the corner on the 4th floor (ground = 0).

Comfortable bed.

A little larger shower with lots of hot water.

David and McKenzie's room

Extra light.

The hang out area

The place is called "The Butterfly House".  You can see why.  Turns out that the owner probably bought her first butterflies in the same Butterfly House where we shopped in San Juan.  The chaise lounge is also butterflies.

She has found lots more since the first.

The dining area.

The kitchen

Watching the World Cup area.

Tom trying to figure out how the appliances work.  Even had to go to the instructions.

OK, you're so smart.  You tell me how to operate this oven!

We went to the Tesco Express (grocery store), bought some breakfast food and frozen pizza and wine and took it all back down the street to Butterfly House.  We finally figured how to operate the oven in at least one mode.  Cooked, ate, and were off to bed.  A good day.  Thanks for reading!!!
