The Road to Brooklyn, New York - June 11 & 12, 2014

We started Day 1 early.  We rented a car to drive to the Brooklyn, NY port...this little blue Nissan Versa. Loaded it to the gills with bags nearly as big as the car!  You can't tell but it has Oregon tags.  When Kathy saw it in the driveway, her heart stopped for a second.....is Lucy here?????

Said farewells to neighbor, Janet, who along with Ginny, will be our official caretakers....

and got on the road by 9:30 AM.  We crossed the Chesapeake Tunnel/Bridge from Norfolk, VA to the DelMarVa peninsula.  A VERY impressive bridge/tunnel, spanning 20 miles across the Chesapeake!!!!!!!  20 MILES!!!  at a cost of $13.......one could hardly gripe about the cost.....that's about 75 cents per mile and when you imagine the work involved, it's a DEAL!

These two picture are of what we THOUGHT was to be a romantic lighthouse under which our romantic bed and breakfast would be situated......closer scrutiny showed it to be the local water tower!  and the romantic bed and breakfast had a balcony which overlooked the roof and all the wiring/condensers, etc!!!!......but Tom being Tom, it was still romantic!!!

We stopped for the night at Hotel Cape Charles in Cape Charles, VA.  It turns out that they are having the Tall Ship festival next weekend.  One of the better ships arrived early

and is beautiful.

We found dinner at the Shanty within view of the harbor and the tall ships.

Oysters, mussels, and rock fish were on the menu.  Delicious!!!

The oysters and the mussels were tasty!

The shanty is just that....a shanty.  Story goes that two guys came to town and asked for the land for $1 and the city sold it to them.....and it has flourished for the past 7 years!!

Cape Charles is also an active port.  The railroad leads nowhere!!!! This is where they make a rail to barge transfer.

We were up early,  ate a light breakfast, loaded and were on the road by 8:18 AM.  It was quite foggy.

We commented that the Eastern Shore/Delmarva peninsula looked like the mainland 50 years ago...sparsely populated farmland and very few services.  Agricultural equipment still rules the road here...or at least that is what we THINK this is!!!!

Still foggy and rainy as we approach the bridges in Delaware.  The Delmarva peninsula is home to all three counties of Delaware, 9 of 23 counties of Maryland and 2 of 95 counties of Virginia! It is a VERY unusual piece of our country....how in the world did our forefathers divide the peninsula in such a quirky manner?

Our destination for our second night is Summit, NJ, Kathy's home during the early 60's, sophomore and junior years of high school.  This is the house.....

and this is her former high school, which is now the junior high...looks like a fortress with beautiful trees which have had one half a century to mature since Kathy's term here!
